What is OPEX?

OPEX is short for options expiration — the day when listed options contracts stop trading and either get exercised or expire worthless. In US equity markets, monthly options on stocks and ETFs expire on the third Friday of every month. Quarterly options, plus index futures and equity index options, all align on the third Friday of March, June, September, and December — a setup traders call Triple Witching.

Why traders care about OPEX dates

  • Volume spikes. Hedge unwinds, position rolls, and pin risk drive outsized volume in the last hour of trading on OPEX day.
  • Pin risk. Heavy open interest at specific strikes can magnetize the underlying price toward those strikes through expiration.
  • Volatility regime change. Implied vol often resets after OPEX as dealer hedging unwinds. Some traders intentionally stay flat into OPEX week.
  • Triple Witching is bigger. Quarterly OPEX involves three derivatives expiring at once, with substantially higher volume and more aggressive rebalancing flows. Worth marking on the calendar.

How these dates are calculated

Pure date math — no API calls. Monthly OPEX is the third Friday of each month. Quarterly OPEX is the last Friday of March, June, September, and December (which always falls on the third Friday under current US listing rules). Holiday-shifted exchange closures can occasionally move expiration to Thursday — verify against your broker for any date that touches a major holiday week.
