Why IPOs are tricky to trade

New listings are unpredictable in their first weeks of trading. There's no historical chart, no established option chain (initially), and the float is often small enough that small orders move the price meaningfully. The IPO calendar is useful for awareness, not necessarily for taking positions on day one.

Key things to know

  • Lock-up expiration. Insiders can't sell for 90–180 days post-IPO. The lock-up expiration date often matters more for trading than the IPO itself.
  • Options take time to list. Most stocks don't get options listed until they've traded for several weeks. No options = no defined-risk trades.
  • Price range may change. The range shown can be revised before pricing — sometimes substantially.
  • Date may slip. IPOs get delayed for market conditions, regulatory questions, or strategic reasons. Treat this calendar as expected, not guaranteed.

Calendar refreshes at most every 4 hours. Verify against the company's SEC filings (S-1) for the most current pricing and timing details.
